Chapter 15

For the first time in years, Adam hesitated as he dressed. Normally, he’d throw on his old jeans and whatever T-shirt happened to be lying at his feet. Today though, he actually chose something to wear, picking out his nicest jeans and a shirt Philippa, his ex, had bought him for his birthday two years ago. The collar pinched at his neck and he ran a finger around it, easing it away. He pretended it was because he was seeing a new client and wanted to make a good impression, but the reality was that her calling him, however briefly, had sparked something other than hurt and frustration.

After dousing himself in a cologne he only wore at Christmas, Adam went to Meadow Farmhouse. The front door was already open as he rounded to it and he could understand why. It was a bright and glorious spring day. The sun’s rays poked through thin wispy clouds, spotlighting the fields. It was the type of day you open all the windows and let the breeze blow the cobwebs from the house. The air smelled of fresh-cut grass.

Before Vera had died, Adam had borrowed a rocking horse from her. He’d been commissioned to make one and wanted to use hers – or should he say Amelia’s – as inspiration. He wondered if subconsciously he’d chosen it to remind himself of the times they’d played with it together as children. She’d remained in his brain since the day she left, and over the years, memories of her had threatened to come to the surface if he didn’t concentrate and push them down.

When he’d returned the rocking horse, the farmhouse had been dark and musty, as Vera’s own gloom cocooned the place. Over the last few years more than any others, she had receded further and further into her shell, only coming into the village once a week for her shopping. If the farm needed anyone’s touch, he supposed an interior designer’s was the best thing to bring it back to life.

Adam called out as he stuck his head through the open doorway, ensuring he didn’t reveal his anxiety at seeing her again. ‘Amelia?’

‘I’m in the kitchen.’

He wiped his feet on the new cheerful welcome mat as he stepped inside. He’d worn his normal work boots, not wanting to look like he was trying too hard impress her, but the nerves were mounting already. The place seemed so much brighter since Amelia had come and livened up the place and not just in terms of decor. A sense of love, care and attention now filled the atmosphere of Meadow Farmhouse and it seemed lighter and more welcoming because of it. It would sell quickly, no doubt, he thought. A family would move in and Amelia’s last tie to Meadowbank would be gone forever. He cleared his throat. ‘Morning.’

Amelia turned back from putting the kettle on, appearing like she belonged somewhere far more elegant than Meadowbank. Her legs were about ten feet tall in dark denim skinny jeans and she wore a short-sleeved black jumper that sat just at her waist.
